Moza Racing Review 2026: The End of Fanatec’s Reign?

Stop playing with toys. If you are still using a gear-driven Logitech G29 or a belt-driven Thrustmaster, you are driving through a filter. You aren't feeling the car; you're feeling the gears grinding inside the plastic casing.

For years, Direct Drive (DD) technology—where the steering wheel attaches directly to the motor shaft—was reserved for wealthy enthusiasts. A Fanatec or Simucube setup used to cost $1,500 minimum.

Then Moza Racing kicked the door down. They released the R5 and R9 wheel bases, promising professional Direct Drive feel for the price of a mid-range toy. But is "cheap Direct Drive" too good to be true? We put the Moza ecosystem through 50 hours of iRacing and Assetto Corsa to find out.

Quick Summary

Primary Tech Direct Drive (Servo Motor).
Ecosystem PC Focused (Xbox Bundle Available).
Build Quality Aviation Grade Aluminum.
Force Feedback 5.5Nm to 21Nm.
Quick Release Real Racing Spec (NRG Style).
Verdict The new value king of Sim Racing.
Editor's Choice 2026 4.8/5

The Final Verdict

Moza Racing has successfully dethroned Fanatec as the go-to recommendation for entry and mid-level sim racers. The build quality is superior (all metal), the Quick Release is miles ahead, and the software is actually user-friendly. If you are looking to buy your first Direct Drive wheel, the Moza R5 or R9 is the smartest money you can spend.

Why Direct Drive Matters

If you are new to this, here is the simple explanation:

  • Gear Driven (Logitech): Noisy, weak, "notchy" feeling.
  • Belt Driven (Thrustmaster): Smoother, but force is absorbed by the rubber belt. Feels "dampened."
  • Direct Drive (Moza): Your hands are connected directly to the motor magnet. You feel every pebble, curb, and tire slip instantly. It is faster, stronger, and silent.

The Lineup Explained

Moza has a confusing number of bases. Here is the cheat sheet:

  1. R3 (3.9Nm): The entry-level. Xbox compatible. A bit weak for serious users.
  2. R5 (5.5Nm): The "Sweet Spot" for beginners. Strong enough to fight you, but safe for a desk setup.
  3. R9 (9Nm): The Enthusiast choice. Requires a sturdy rig. Incredible detail.
  4. R12 / R16 / R21: Professional grade for hardcore simulation.

Build Quality & The "NRG" QR

This is where Moza destroys the competition. Even their cheapest R5 base is made of aviation-grade aluminum. There is no cheap plastic housing here.

The Quick Release (QR): Moza uses a D-Spec Quick Release derived from real race cars (NRG style). It uses steel ball bearings. You can swap wheels in 1 second with a satisfying "Click." Compare this to Fanatec's plastic "QR1 Lite" which often creaks and cracks, and Moza wins easily.

Moza Pit House Software

Hardware is useless without good software. Moza Pit House is the control center for your wheel.

💻
Mobile App Control: The killer feature is the mobile app. You can tweak your Force Feedback settings while driving using Bluetooth on your phone. No need to Alt-Tab out of the game.

The software includes "One-Click" presets for popular titles like Assetto Corsa Competizione, F1 23, and iRacing, making setup very beginner-friendly.

Force Feedback Quality

We tested the R9 (9Nm) on Assetto Corsa Competizione.

  • Smoothness: There is zero "grain." It feels like moving your hand through water.
  • Detail: You can feel the difference between the rubber on the track and the painted curb.
  • Catching Slides: Because the motor reacts instantly (low latency), catching a slide is much easier than on a belt-drive wheel.

Does It Overheat?

Direct Drive motors can get hot. We ran the R9 at 100% force for a 45-minute endurance race.

Result: The aluminum casing got warm to the touch (about 45°C), but it effectively dissipates heat. We noticed zero Force Feedback fade. The housing acts as a giant heatsink, which is a smart design choice.

Desk Clamp vs. Cockpit

⚠️
Rig Warning: The R5 comes with a desk clamp and works fine on a sturdy desk. The R9 does NOT come with a clamp and is strong enough to shake a desk apart. For the R9, we highly recommend a wheel stand or aluminum profile rig.

Moza vs. The Competition

The main rival is Fanatec.

Pros & Cons

The Good
  • Best-in-class Quick Release system.
  • Excellent build quality (All metal).
  • Mobile app for "on the fly" tuning.
  • R5 Bundle is the best value starter kit in sim racing.
The Bad
  • Pedals in the R5 bundle are basic (no load cell).
  • Limited PlayStation compatibility.
  • Steering wheels can be pricey sold separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the R5 strong enough?

For 90% of gamers, yes. 5.5Nm is enough to feel the road texture and weight transfer. However, if you are a large person or want to simulate heavy vintage cars without power steering, you might want the R9.

Does it work with PS5 or Xbox?

The Moza R3 Bundle is officially licensed for Xbox. Currently, Moza does not have a native PlayStation base, though some users use third-party adapters like the "Ras1ution 2" (not officially supported).

Are the pedals good?

The SR-P Lite pedals included in the R5 bundle are decent but use Hall Sensors, not a Load Cell. For serious racing, we recommend upgrading to the SR-P Load Cell pedals or buying the "Performance Brake Kit" mod.

Where do they ship from?

Moza has domestic warehouses in the US, Europe, and Australia. Shipping is generally fast (3-7 days) compared to competitors who ship from China.

Final Verdict

Sim racing has a new champion of value. Moza Racing offers the premium feel of a $1,500 setup for a third of the price.

While Fanatec struggles with logistics and supply chain issues, Moza has delivered a reliable, high-quality ecosystem that just works. If you are ready to graduate from Logitech toys, the R5 Bundle is the perfect first step. If you are building a dedicated rig, get the R9.

💡
Buying Tip: Buy directly from the official store. Resellers often mark up the price, and buying direct ensures you get the latest "V2" revisions of the hardware with improved ports.
